Boosting Brain Power

boosting brain power

This is a humorous look about boosting brain power and your running too! Creatine, as we know, is usually taken for athletic reasons. However, experts say that it has may have a role in maintaining brain energy levels. Taking more creatine might actually improve mental performance!

In a 2003 study published by the Royal Society journal Proceedings, Dr Caroline Rae of the University of Sydney, Australia reports that researchers from the University of Sydney and Macquarie University ran a double blind test on 45 young adult volunteers, all vegetarians. Vegetarians were used because meat contains creatine and would have skewed the results.

Volunteers were split into two groups and given either creatine or a placebo for a six week period. Memorization ability was tested, and an IQ test was administered to the volunteers.

Dr. Rae found that creatine supplements - at least in the short term - had a positive effect on brain function. Subjects receiving creatine were able to remember longer numbers and their IQ improved - as measured against the placebo group.

Can't have everything...

Dr. Rae cautions, however, that there's no long term evidence of mental alertness after the cessation of creatine trials. Dr. Rae neglected to comment regarding possible effects on running performance!
