Running Motivation

The Accidental Marathoner

What determines your running motivation? What are about your limits of endurance? What are your capabilities when all the chips were down?

A Master Runner's Endurance

Catherine Dickson from Prince Edward Island, 47 years old, traveled to Greece with Team Diabetes for a 10 km fund raising walk. The walk, in conjunction with the 2009 Classic Greek Marathon, allowed "less athletic" participants to raise money in support of diabetes research.

Catherine travelled from her home in P.E.I to Athens to walk for the memory of her mother and sister - both victims of diabetes.

Looking forward to the walk, Catherine was stunned to learn that she had boarded the wrong bus. She had accidentally boarded the marathon bus. After the unsympathetic bus driver delivered her to the Marathon start line, Ms. Dickson made her decision: "I didn't come all this way to do nothing. I want to do this."

Not many marathoners take a back-pack along, but Catherine and her friend Hilda Seagull set out with all the paraphernalia you need for a leisurely 10 km walk.

A Marathon Begins...

Surprisingly, the fist 20 km were pretty good considering the challenging up-and-down course of valleys and hills.

The next 10 km were so-so, but the last 12 km were another matter. By then her legs were chafed and bleeding, and the rainy weather was less than ideal.

Marathon Mission Accomplished

The sun began to shine for the last four kilometers, and Dickson knew she had to finish the course.

"I was never an athlete," said Dickson at the finish, mother of four. "To have someone put a medal around your neck, that was surreal. I was sore but I did it. I set out to do what I wanted to do."

Who do you know that has outrun their "limits"?

More Running Motivation

Now if you are going to win any battle you have to do one thing.

You have to make the mind run the body. Never let the body tell the mind what to do.

The body will always give up. It is always tired morning, noon, and night. But the body is never tired if the mind is not tired.

When you were younger the mind could make you dance all night, and the body was never tired ... You've always got to make the mind take over and keep going.
